Landowner Tag Information by State


New Mexico Landowner Tags
New Mexico has one of the best landowner tag programs in the west. Landowners wanting to receive landowner tags must register with New Mexico game and fish department and have property with suitable habitat for desired species. There is no minimum acreage to be eligible for this program and tags can be sold/transferred to anyone of landowner choosing. Two different types are available in New Mexico. First is the ranch-only tag and it is valid for the designated property and only that designated property. The second type is a unit wide landowner tag which is valid for the entire unit on public and any/all private land a hunter can get access to. The vast majority of landowners in New Mexico are for elk, however other species like deer, antelope, and oryx have landowner tags available in certain units.

California Landowner Tags
California offers a select number of landowner tags for various species, including deer, elk, and wild boar. The PLM or private lands management program was set up by California Department of Fish and Game to incentivize landowners to manage property for the benefit of wildlife. Landowners can apply for PLM through the department and depending on acreage and/or animal use on property will be granted permits. These permits can be transferred to the person of the landowners choosing. This is a great opportunity for hunters to bypass a difficult draw system and hunt the diverse state of California.

Nevada Landowner Tags
Nevada also has one of the best landowner tag systems of the western states. Landowners receive tags from the state depending on the number of animals that are using their property. These tags can be sold to anyone the landowner chooses, and a hunter can buy multiple tags if they so desire to. Hunters holding a Nevada landowner deer tag may hunt all weapon seasons, but elk tag holders must choose one weapon to hunt with and hunt only the dates valid for that weapon. Nevada landowner tags are highly sought after due to trophy quality in many areas and can be quite expensive compared to other states. Hunters in search of a trophy class animal will want to give Nevada a look.

Oregon Landowner Tags
In Oregon, landowner tags can be received directly from the landowner, or outfitters that have been permitted to hunt property. Tags are valid for the registered property only and cannot be used anywhere else. Landowners can apply for LOP tags through a draw and will need to designate an applicant of their choice to receive the tag if drawn. Landowners must have a minimum of 40 contiguous acres to be eligible for the landowner tag program. Property size will determine number of applications a landowner receives for tags on a yearly basis. Landowner tags cannot be sold in Oregon, however a trespass fee or guided hunt fee often times is associated with a landowner tag.

Utah Landowner Tags
Utah offers two types of landowner tags. One is the typical landowner tag that is given as a compensation for wildlife use on private land, however these tags my be good unit wide and can be used on public as well as private ground. Or there are private land only tags good for that specific private land only. The second type is part of the Cooperative Wildlife Management Unit or CWMU program. This program incentivizes landowners with larger acreage sections (5,000-10,000 plus) to manage property for the benefit of wildlife and in exchange they receive transferable tags that are valid for that property. Hunters can obtain a tag from a landowner or property manager but must hunt that specific CWMU.

Colorado Landowner Tags
Colorado landowner tags must be purchased directly from the landowner or property manager. No third-party transactions are allowed, this includes buying a landowner voucher from a outfitter. Landowner tags are divided into two groups, private land only and unit wide. Private land only or PLO are valid on any private land within the hunt unit. Unit wide tags or LLP are valid for the entire hunt unit including private and public lands. Landowner must have a minimum of 160 contiguous acres to be eligible for the landowner tag program. Colorado sets aside a percentage of tags for this program and landowners must apply in a draw to receive a tag. Depending on unit, species, and season dates it may take several years of applying and point building for landowners to draw a tag in this system.

Who can list vouchers for sale on this page?
Any landowner or designated land manager that is allowed to legally resell a landowner big game voucher is allowed to submit a listing for approval on this page.

Does Huntin’ Fool resell landowner vouchers?
Due to the increased demand and severe shortage of supply, Huntin’ Fool no longer provides a priority list or brokerage services for landowner vouchers across the West.

Why are there no landowner tag listings?
Colorado landowner vouchers must be drawn by qualifying landowners and results will not be made available until early June. New Mexico E-Plus landowner vouchers awarded to Base ranches may be listed at any time. New Mexico vouchers awarded to SCR (small ranches) will not become available until mid-June.
