Mountain goat hunting in Utah offers some of the best harvest opportunities in the West. Most units maintain a 100% success rate, with rare exceptions typically resulting from hunters passing on available goats or being unprepared for the physical demands of the hunt. Overall trophy quality is average, with few goats exceeding the 50” mark or reaching 10” horn length; however, there are still ample opportunities to harvest mature billies for those fortunate enough to draw a permit.

Non-residents have access to the same five hunts this year as last year. Among these, the Wasatch Mountains (Timpanogos, La Sals, High Uintas (West), and Nebo units tend to be the most physically demanding. That said, all of these units also contain areas where successful hunts can be accomplished with long day hikes rather than extended backcountry efforts. The Beaver unit in particular can be physically challenging, but most goats are located within day-hiking distance, eliminating the need for overnight pack-ins.

UNIT	COMMENTS
Beaver	Central portion of the state. Rolling, high alpine ridges and basins. Very open, glassable talus and grassy slopes. Some rocky chutes and cliffs, but overall, it can be physically easy hunting. Good access roads. The bulk of the herd occupies the Tushar range in the central portion of the unit, but small herds can also be found on Circleville Mountain and the cliffs and canyons in Oak Basin. Trophy potential is still good but not what it was 10 years ago. 5 of the 7 goats harvested during the early rifle season were billies in 2023. Average days hunted in 2023 was 4.
High Uintas West	Northcentral part of the state, located between the Chalk Creek/Kamas unit and the Central unit, this area holds the largest population of mountain goats in the Uintas range. The terrain is rugged, high alpine, and rocky, with most goats inhabiting the High Uintas Wilderness. Access is best via hiking or horseback, and there are good trail systems. Focus on the high peaks of the main range and the extended ridges running north and south. While herds are well-distributed, the population has declined, making mature billies harder to find. 9 of the 14 goats harvested were billies in 2023. Average days hunted in 2023 was 7.
La Sal, La Sal Mtns	In the southeastern part of the state, most of the goat country consists of steep, rugged, high-elevation basins that are accessible only on foot or horseback. It is still mostly dayhike hunting if in good shape. As the year progresses and snow accumulates, accessing remote basins becomes more challenging. Trophy potential is decent, but billies over 9” are rare. Goats remain concentrated in specific basins, making them easier to locate in those areas. 6 out of the 9 goats harvested were billies in 2023. Average days hunted in 2023 was 4.
Nebo	Population is doing very well in this unit. Most of the country goats are located in will be long day hikes or multi-day backpacking. Hunters have been able to glass a lot of goats from roads adjacent to mountain ranges, but they are in steep, high bluffs. This is one of Utah’s better goat units right now, but expect a physical hunt. The archery hunt was taken out of the non-resident pool for 2025. Hair should still be good towards late September. 10 of the 11 goats harvested during the rifle hunt were billies in 2023. Average days hunted in 2023 was 3.
Wasatch Mountains, Timpanogos	This unit is located along the southern Wasatch Front. Goats are visible from roads all around the unit. Depending on where the goats are found can be long day hikes or backpack trips. Population is doing well with mature billies available. This is a new hunt for non-residents for 2025. You will have non-hunting recreationists on the mountain with you with the close proximity to the Wasatch Front.

Ultimately, any mountain goat tag in Utah is a highly sought-after opportunity. We consistently recommend applying for the mountain goat if you are already planning the draw for other Utah species. Beginning last year, a revised interpretation of the 10% non-resident quota resulted in four of the five hunts offering two non-resident permits, allowing bonus permits to be issued in those units. Beaver Early was the lone exception, offering only one non-resident tag. With an application fee of just $21, this hunt represents excellent value for anyone lucky enough to draw a once-in-a-lifetime permit.
