Alaska Dall Sheep Hunting 2026

Guide Required

As with most of the continent, Alaska continues to have strange weather events. Luckily for the Dall sheep, we haven’t seen any new die off events caused by winter weather. Most guides and hunters are reporting decent numbers of ewes and lambs across the mountain ranges that hold sheep populations. While overall numbers are a far cry from the early 2000’s, there is hope on the horizon for those fortunate enough to be able to afford a guided Dall sheep hunt in the future.

Alaska Dall Sheep Hunting Draw

Non-residents are experiencing about a 50% harvest success on their hunts, with some outfitters reporting closer to 75% harvest. Alaska’s state-level management maintains that “full curl, 8-year-old” hunting practices aren’t causing harm to the overall sheep populations, but the debate around sheep hunting is deeply rooted in social tensions between resident and non-resident hunting pressure – how permits should be distributed, how often one should hunt, waiting periods, and the increasing pressure of competition for a fickle resource.

It’s crucial to understand that registered outfitters cannot simply move their operation to areas with better sheep populations. In Alaska, federal land use programs strictly control where outfitters can operate, with limited, specific areas allocated by the Big Game Commercial Services Board. State of Alaska lands allow for an unlimited number of outfitters to obtain use authorizations, but this could change in the near future with a concession based program and new allocated areas. This is unlike other western states where guides have more flexibility to relocate. Federal overreach by subsistence boards has amplified the tensions between residents and non-residents, moving hunting pressure to other parts of the state, crowding already stressed sheep populations, and creating more in-field conflicts.

Alaska Dall Sheep Draw Continued

Dall Sheep season runs from August 10th to September 30th depending on season and location.

Review the table featured in our December 2025 issue about popular general season units to make better, more informed decisions about where to hunt. Remember, Alaska imposes a restriction of one ram per non-resident every four regulatory years, regardless of whether it’s from a draw unit or over-the-counter area. Residents may hunt and harvest Dall sheep every regulatory year.

The sheep draw hunts in the following table aren’t about ensuring trophy hunts but rather limiting hunter numbers. Only one area, the Tok Management Area, is designated for trophy management, but is still only offering 10 total permits. The Chugach Mountains in units 13 and 14 are known for their heavy horn genetics and were home to some great rams taken during the 2025 fall season. But keep in mind, overall sheep numbers are extremely low as well.

If a hunter’s goal is simply to pursue a legal ram with a qualified guide, there are quite a few over-the-counter in general season units across most mountain ranges in the state. Regardless of the draw units or general units, guided Dall sheep hunts will cost between $30,000 and $55,000 in Alaska.
